PRESIDENTIAL WAITING ROOM TECHNICAL DETAILS

The distinguished Presidential Waiting Room has, for decades, been reserved for only a select few. Among Finland’s presidents, Urho Kekkonen in particular often used the room to receive esteemed guests.

Today, these same walls provide a magnificent setting for meetings, kick-offs, annual celebrations and graduations. The room still carries the graceful atmosphere of bygone eras, yet its facilities and services meet modern expectations – right in the heart of Helsinki.

The Presidential Lounge – history and elegance in the heart of Helsinki Central Railway Station

For over a century, Helsinki Central Railway Station has been the gateway to the capital. At its heart lies a truly unique space – the Presidential Lounge. This distinguished waiting room has witnessed some of Finland’s most significant historical moments and served in many different roles throughout the years.

From Imperial Waiting Room to Presidential Chamber

The Presidential Lounge originated even before Finland’s independence, when Eliel Saarinen designed an imperial waiting room in the station building for the use of the Russian ruler. After Finland gained its independence, the space was assigned to the President of the Republic and became the Presidential Waiting Room — a place where the head of state could prepare for travels or receive distinguished guests.

Historic moments

The Presidential Lounge has served as the stage for many memorable events. The most well-known took place in 1940, when President Kyösti Kallio bid farewell to his successor Risto Ryti and Marshal Mannerheim in this very room. Moments later, he collapsed outside the station before the honour guard and passed away in the arms of his aide-de-camp.

Later, President Urho Kekkonen frequently used the lounge to receive foreign dignitaries. Over the years, the room has displayed treasures of Finnish art, and by tradition, it features the official portrait of the sitting President.

Present day – celebrations and meetings

The Presidential Lounge is a protected part of Helsinki Central Railway Station, and its historical grandeur has been carefully preserved through meticulous restoration. Now, under the management of Kellotorni, the space begins a new chapter in its story and is available for meetings and celebrations alike.

Its architectural elegance, unique location in the very heart of the railway station, and rich history make the Presidential Lounge an exceptional setting for both official functions and private events.
