Olympiasali

Helsinki Central Railway Station is full of stories, and one of its most fascinating spaces is Olympiasali. The hall was created in the mid-1950s when the station concourse facing Rautatientori Square was expanded, and a new banquet hall was built upstairs. It took its name from the plans made for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. The Games had already ended, but Olympiasali remained — becoming a lasting part of the station’s everyday life and celebrations alike.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Olympiasali was also known as a popular after-work spot for locals. It became especially favored by working women, who found it to be one of the few places where they could enjoy a beer without being disturbed. For that reason, the hall was considered an exceptionally equal and progressive meeting place for its time.

Over the decades, Olympiasali has served as a stage for countless events and gatherings. The space still carries the spirit of Eliel Saarinen’s Jugend-style architecture, even as its role has evolved with the times.

In 2025, Olympiasali began a new chapter as part of Kellotorni’s event restaurant. Following a thorough restoration, the hall once again opens its doors to locals and visitors alike, offering a vibrant setting for gatherings and celebrations. The historic space now features several Paavo Tynell light fixtures that enhance its timeless atmosphere.
