The imposing clock tower of Helsinki Central Railway Station was completed in 1919 and immediately became one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

The tower was never just a home for the clock itself. It also housed various technical and administrative facilities. In the 1950s, several additional floors were built, providing space for the station restaurant’s kitchens and storage rooms. This expansion connected the tower’s interior even more closely to the daily life of the station and its passengers.

For decades, the station restaurant was also known for its pioneering kitchen technology. It was here that the latest innovations — such as potato-peeling machines — were first introduced to ease the challenge of feeding large numbers of travelers. The clock tower and its adjoining kitchen spaces stood at the heart of modern food production of their time.

In 2025, the history of Helsinki Central Railway Station’s clock tower took a new turn as the Kellotornisali reopened for events. Located on the second floor, the fully renovated hall combines the architectural elegance of the tower with modern comfort.

The space, designed for around sixty guests, offers an intimate alternative to the larger Olympiasali and invites guests to create new memories in occasions where the past and the future meet.
